Wabi Sabi House

The Wabi Sabi House sits on the backwater of South Creek in Osprey Florida, on a large lot filled with cabbage palms and Australian pines. . As potters and dealers of midcentury modern furniture, its ascetic of unfinished block, exposed formwork, and clear galvalume siding are a testament to the client’s appreciation of material and craft. Materials are left in their natural state as a way of expressing the process and “hand” of the builders. Much like the fingermarks on a hand thrown vessel, the wood grain of the forms is impressed into cast-in-place beams, as is the regular mark of the form ties. Cypress ceilings, and cork and plywood floors brings a warmth and depth, which serves as a counterpoint to the armature of masonry and concrete holding the living and working areas up above the base flood elevation.

Seated on a large site, the living quarters and the separate pottery studio are pushed to the edges thereby creating a bounded open area in the middle which rolls down to the water. Each interior space borrows from this space to expand its sense of openness and connection to the exterior.

Wabi Sabi House Zazarino Center St Martha Catholic School

Hall Architects is the project design team leader and Architect-of-Record for a new 28,641 square foot multipurpose building at St. Martha Catholic School in Sarasota, Florida. The single-story building houses a regulation basketball arena with bleachers, locker rooms, offices, a working stage, four middle school classrooms and a multi-purpose community meeting room. In addition, the new Zazarino Center is hurricane hardened and will serve as a shelter during storm events.

The work was planned to allow construction operations to run simultaneous with school being in session and to avoid impacting normal car line drop off and pick up, after care, and other essential daily activities. Campus safety and construction logistics were included in pre-construction planning and impacted the building design.

Zazarino Center St Martha Catholic School Tervis Innovation Center

This 23,000 square foot building is the new home of Tervis’ creative team, marketing, new product development, and art departments. Flat hierarchy and a collaborative culture resulted in an open floor plan demarcated by team meeting rooms constructed of acrylic sheeting. Experimental materials and material assemblies were used to create fixed-wall flex spaces between open areas. Advanced technologies were integrated to allow for future expansion and reconfiguration required by corporate evolution. The creative design for this facility was produced on a limited budget, and design and construction delivery was in a 20-month period.

Tervis Innovation Center Mote Marine Tropical Research Lab

The Mote Marine Tropical Research Lab is a 13,000 sq. ft. building on Summerland Key which will house research laboratories, education classrooms, and dormitories to support on-going research in coral reef restoration. The building will be USGBC Gold certified, hardened to withstand Category 5 storms, and is constructed from modular construction to facilitate rapid project delivery.

Mote Marine Tropical Research Lab Garden

With obvious influence from the Sarasota School of Architecture, this single story mid-century home is situated within the urban grid of Sarasota, Florida. The home was originally constructed in 1951 and underwent a major renovation in 2009.

Considerable effort was taken to renew the home’s original spirit of inside-outside living. The tops of wall were replaced by glass to allow daylight to penetrate the plane. Exterior walls were removed and garden structures were added to further define exterior living areas. The home has a full range of passive and active sustainable features.

Garden Dogtrot

Indigenous to the southern region, the “dogtrot” is a plan typology where the principal interior spaces are organized around a central exterior breezeway. DOGTROT is situated on a narrow lot in an urban neighborhood just off Florida’s Gulf Coast inland waterway. The house faces north and has a clear southern exposure. Deep overhangs cast shadows across the south façade, enhancing the passive characteristics of the home’s plan typology. A rich interplay is achieved between the natural rough-sawn clear cypress siding and “raw” sand finished cement plaster. Shell topped concrete through the breezeway and exterior terraces along with the swimming pool’s tranquil blue waters provide a reference to the nearby shore.

Dogtrot Hammock

Sited on a wooded parcel of land along Florida’s southwest Gulf coast, the home is designed to maintain the delicate balance between a fragile wetlands ecosystem where land meets water. Three grandfather oak trees, each measuring over 40 inches in diameter, serve as silent landmarks in this subtropical paradise.

The house describes the balance between the natural and man-made environments. The principal gathering spaces are defined by series of walls that splay apart, like a fanned deck of cards, giving an unfolding view of the landmark trees on the site. Overhead, the raked roof plane reinforces direction, emphasis, and explodes interior rooms to the exterior living spaces.

Hammock John Ringling Parkway Addition

The John Ringling Parkway Addition sits on the bay between St. Armand’s Key and City Island. With commanding views of the city over Sarasota Bay, the existing house was a Sarasota School Modern by Architect Tim Seibert. The challenge was to add a sizable addition while still preserving and restoring the ascetic and scale of the older house. The 60’s era structure spanned the breadth of the site, leaving precious little room to expand. A strategy was developed to create a structure which bridges over the original view and provides shade to the long south facing glass wall of the original great room.

John Ringling Parkway Addition Seagrape House

The architecture utilizes natural ventilation and light; doors and windows open to the garden. A clearstory staircase functions as a “chimney” ventilating the warm air and drawing in cooler air.

Honesty of material has been stressed throughout the design. Exposed buff colored concrete block, wooden screens and expanses of glass are the vernacular of this architecture.

A six-foot “trapion” wall constructed of native Florida limestone that is quarried less than 20 miles away, provides shade and privacy to the interior garden and mitigates adjacent road noise.

A “Green Screen” consisting of three different flowering vines is incorporated into the southern façade to mitigate temperature while allowing filtered light into the interior spaces.

Twenty-five existing palms remain on site, with a few being relocated to accommodate the building footprint.

Rainwater is collected into a 15,000-gallon cistern to augment a drip irrigation system during dry months. A 14-foot lineal waterfall, falls into a solar heated pool, creating white noise to produce a tranquil effect.

The planting pallet utilizes 80% native, salt tolerant plants appropriate for planting near saltwater. A roof-top garden surrounded with plantings of Sand Cordgrass offers privacy and views to Sarasota Bay.

Seagrape House Twins House

Designed for a young family of four just starting out, the Twins’ House is a study in elegant simplicity. Two cubes of raw concrete block are carefully shaped and carved to create a series of courtyards and roof terraces which open up to a beautiful site of old growth oak and palm trees

Twins House Umbrella House

The Umbrella House is a mid-century modern home designed by noted architect Paul Rudolph. Built in 1953, its iconic design is representative of southwest Florida’s post World War II modern design movement, Sarasota Modern. Called the Umbrella House because of a large wood-louvered structure covering the entire house for the purpose of imposing shade from Florida’s penetrating sun, the original structure was destroyed in 1966 due to Hurricane Alma.

Hall Architects was hired as the restoration architect to lead the design of reconstructing the umbrella and returning the exterior of the house to its prime, using original plans and drawings. Materials were used that not only preserve the original look and feel of the home, but adhere to current building codes and hurricane standards of Southwest Florida.

Umbrella House Big Cypress Youth Home

This 4,500 square foot facility was designed to provide temporary housing and youth services for children of parents who are ill or undergoing treatment. The building includes secure dorms, a permanent residence for a program director, private office, laundry facilities, large kitchen, living, dining, and recreational areas.

Charter School Cafeteria Tervis Corporate Office Expansion

The 40,000 square foot expansion of Tervis’s office and light industrial production areas includes large and small group collaboration spaces, open plan to promote exchange, training rooms, private offices, advanced communication and data systems, flexibility / re-assignability of work spaces, and daylighting / view. The design of the corporate office space promotes the company’s culture of horizontal hierarchy and characterizes the youthful spirit and healthy lifestyle fostered by the company’s product line.

Tervis Corporate Office Expansion Seminole Building

The Veterans Building is a 23,000 sf multi-purpose building containing auditorium, meeting rooms, offices, Veterans Hall, and two museums honoring the history of the Seminole warrior. This civic building is a community gathering place and has become a local landmark.

Evaluation Projects

The first and most important step in the preservation of our material or cultural heritage is to understand the breadth and scope of its historical significance. Careful analysis leads to the identification of a historic artifact’s value. Detailed evaluation provides a “snapshot” of a property’s current condition and projects the feasibility for a range of preservation treatments.

The firm regularly prepares architectural documentation to HABS / HAER standards for either Section 106 compliance and loss mitigation or as a part of a larger preservation program. In addition, the firm prepares planning documents such as Historic Structures Reports following the National Park Service recommended practices and ASTM STP 1258.

Evaluation Rehabilitation

The Secretary of the Interior defines Rehabilitation as the process of returning a property to a state of utility, through repair or alteration, which makes possible an efficient contemporary use while preserving those portions and features of the property which are significant to its historic, architectural, and cultural values.

Rehabilitation proposes a building's highest and best use is its original function. Efforts are directed toward allowing the long-term maintenance of its original use.

The firm has expertise in the interpretation of historic resources and the application of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Rehabilitation of Historic Properties.

Adaptive use is the process of adapting old structures for other purposes than were initially intended.

Repurposing existing building stock is the highest form of sustainability. The process requires a comprehensive knowledge of architectural history, historic building materials, historic material systems, and the ability to determine the cultural significance and character-defining elements of a historic resource.

Adaptive Use Conservation

Architectural conservation focuses on the issue of prolonging the life, integrity, and character of historic architectural building materials and material systems. The architectural conservator combines a thorough knowledge of science, art, craft, and technology and its use as a preservation tool.

With over three decades as preservation consultants across the Southeast and Caribbean, Hall Architects, PA has developed methods for evaluating the material conservation requirements for historic materials such as: concrete, tabby, coquina, stone, brick masonry, cast iron, wrought iron, wood, and architectural coatings as well as material systems for windows, doors, roofs, and exterior walls and cladding components.

Conservation Planning

Preservation planning is a process that organizes the preservation activities of identification, evaluation, and treatment in a logical sequence. Preservation planning defines the relationship among these activities while providing standards for how each activity should be carried out.

Planning for the management of historic resources within community development and urban design provides a means to integrate a community's past with its future. Preservation planning establishes strategies for the retention and long-term maintenance of a property's identity and intrinsic historic value.

Planning Tervis Expansion

The interior of this corporate headquarters was designed to be an expression of the corporate ideas of transcending pure function to a whole lot of fun. Interior detailing drew inspiration from the company’s product line of festively branded insulated plastic tumblers.

Tervis Expansion Hall Hall Garden Interior

Developed in collaboration with Dane Spencer Landscape Architect, this project removed the boundaries between the inside and outside of a modest early 1960's ranch house. Emphasis was given to the roof through the addition of cypress finish and clear story windows. The entire home was renovated and a new office addition completes a tranquil garden space. The house won the 2010 James Rose prize for sustainable design.

Garden Interior Bayview

Developed in collaboration with the firm of Carl Abbott FAIA Architect / Planner, the Bay View House is a composition of inside-out spaces which orient to striking views to the waterway that surrounds the home on three sides. This new 9,000 square foot home features elegant compositions of material, form, and detail.
